General Product & Installation
Information
Note: It is normal and even
expected that under certain storage and temperature conditions, some resin products will
"bend". Should this occur, the situation can be remedied prior to installation
by placing the product flat and warming it for a short period of time, (heat lamp,
electric blanket, etc.). The cast part retains a "memory" from it original mold
and can be straightened.
1.Preparation Cleaning:
Because transportation, storage and handling of resin product could possibility result in
contamination that might adversely affect the adherence of paints or stains, it is
recommended that parts be thoroughly cleaned with acetone or lacquer thinner prior to
staining or painting. Sanding: A light sanding of some areas may be desired in order to
provide optimum appearance and paint/stain adhesion. However, remember the highly textured
surface that some "Architectural Innovations" products possess (wood grain,
stone, etc.) is on the surface only; excessive sanding will eliminate the texture although
it will not affect the structural integrity of the part itself.
2. Installation Adhesives:
Any wood glue, construction adhesive, or super glue (gel form only) will provide excellent
results provided manufacturer specifications and weight considerations are taken into
account. Nails, tape or clamps can be used to hold material in place until the adhesive
cures. Nailing, Screws: If nails or screws are used for installation, keep the following
in mind in order to prevent damage or breakage: * Predrilling is recommended * Just as
with wood, in order to prevent breakage or slitting, nails should never be placed less
than 3/8" from the edge of any resin part. Do not overstress flexible material
(overbend, attempt to stretch or force into place, etc.) Cutting, sanding or shaping of
resin parts can be done using standard woodworking tools. Temperature: To provide optimum
handling during installation, material should be kept between 60 and 80 degrees F.
Excessively cold temperatures can make product installation difficult and could result in
breakage. Hint: On the job site, storing flexible moldings or ornament flat ( or even
under an electric blanket in excessively cold temperatures) will aid in installation.
3. Finishing All of our
resin products may be stained or painted. However, due to the nature of our product and
the inherent differences as compared to wood, some experimentation with techniques will
help ensure successful application. For a painted surface, almost any good quality
interior or exterior paint may be used - latex, acrylic, alkyd, etc. (You will never go
wrong if you check with your paint/stain professional first for advice!) If a stained look
is desired the following tips may help you achieve your goal: Wood stain should be applied
sparingly and directly to the resin part with a brush. Better control of this application
can be achieved by dipping only the ends of the bristles of the brush into the stain, and
then brushing the stain onto the surface of the part and down into any crevices. If a
darker look is desired, repeat the process (per stain manufacturer specifications) until
the desired color is achieved. Resin does not absorb stain like wood; heavy coats of stain
should never be applied.
